Description : I have made this route using Tim Court’s MidEast route (UK1) and adapted it to reflect the East Coast Mainline as far as Retford and routes through Eastern England and the Nottinghamshire coalfields to as near as possible as they were in the BR steam era of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. All the mechanical signalling and signal boxes are back in place and the signalling is authentic to Absolute, Permissive and Track circuit block regulations. The only exception is the small area of Huntingdon Station itself whereby I could not increase the amount of signals to the required amount because of the constraints of the Route Editor and the tile count. By the end of the early 1960’s colour light signalling was in place on the immediate approaches to and from Holloway to Kings Cross on the main lines whilst mechanical signalling was still in use on the goods lines from Belle Isle and indeed Kings Cross itself. Peterborough was by this time controlled by colour lights signals with a small Power Signal Box to the north of the station. Extra scenery has been put in place including Steam sheds and their paraphernalia including interactive coal supplies and water towers. I have not installed turntables as they take up a lot of space and are not interactive anyway. Interactive water towers have also been placed in sidings and on station platforms in their original positions so you should never have to run out of fuel or water!! Other landmarks have been included as well – Wood Green for instance has been renamed “Wood Green for Alexandra Palace” its steam era title – see if you can spot the old “Ally Pally” as it was locally known complete with its BBC TV News television transmitting aerial on the roof of one of the towers . Anomalies: Two anomalies exist from the original route. Firstly the original route has some confusion as to the location of the branch through Royston to Cambridge. This indeed branched off at Cambridge Junction about a mile to the North of Hitchin. The original route has this branching off at St Neots. The confusion I think stems from the North Western Oxford – Bletchley-Bedford-Cambridge route which crossed over the ECML using flat junctions at Sandy in Bedfordshire about 10 miles to the south of St Neots. To rectify this confusion would mean totally destroying the track database for the original route which I did not want to do and I doubt if Tim Court, the original Author of the route would have agreed to anyway. Therefore I have re-instated the branch to Royston and Cambridge at Cambridge Junction (Hitchin) for a couple of miles, and using a little “Modellers Licence” I have signalled, featured and incorporated the old LNWR route to Cambridge from St Neots rather than Sandy. Secondly the Branch from Helpston Junction north of Peterborough to Stamford was, in the original route, laid, but nothing else was done and it was unfinished. I have fully signalled the Branch and placed the stations and some scenery, however I am not at all familiar with this Branch Line and for the sake of authenticity I Have deliberately not finished it. I will update this Branch with a new version of the route in the distant future after I have visited and fully researched the Branch for the era in question. Time will not allow this to be anywhere near immediate though. Once again I hope you enjoy this quite extensive and very interesting route and that it comes up to your expectations for a freeware route.
