Some folk in the community however have been pushing Trainz to the limits and
proving that even without official support it is still possible to do some
When Claes emailed me and introduced his new 'Big Boy' I was intrigued, from
what i've seen in the MSTS release it's an awesome steam locomotive and such
a beast on Trainz should be interesting to see!
The distribution comes as an approx 7 meg download using the lesser spotted
'RAR' file format. A quick email back to Claes revealed that it is actually

The result is a single 'CDP' file for the Trainz Content Despatcher - just
double click on the CDP file and it self installs without any difficulty
A quick buzz in to Driver located the loco and tender and within moments we
were in the sim and steaming.
Holy steam engines batman, that's one awesome looking locomotive - both the
real one and this particular model.
Trainz allows for very high polygon count models and Claes has taken full
advantage of this as you can see from some of the screenshots where I have
tried to get up close and personal with it.
One thing that I was particularly impressed with was the absolutely fantastic
smoke effects that have been used. As you go in to the sim the engine
sits there and various valves on the top let off steam and then
finally some valves go off at the base blasting steam out to the sides. As
you pull away you see the outstanding valve gear doing its work and
below each cylinder box you can see a small exhaust of steam at just the
Sounds are very good - though as I have no idea what the real one sounds
like I can't comment on that. Sounded very steamy though to me :)
Animation is extremely high quality, modelling is equally high and the
detail is excellent.
As Trainz does not support Steam there is no cab view and hence no way to
drive the locomotive using anything other than the DCC (model railway
